Access and Use

By the summer of 1999, more than 87% Blacksburg's 38,000 citizens were using the Internet on a regular basis. More than 475 local businesses advertise online, or about 75% of all businesses in the Blacksburg area. Many office buildings in the area are completely wired for direct, high speed access to the Internet. The ubiquitous network facilities in Blacksburg enable local businesses to conduct world-wide operations easily.

More than half of the Internet users have dial-up (modem) access. Some connections are made using the public-access library computers. The remaining connections are made using Ethernet in offices, dorm rooms, and over 3000 apartment units. Blacksburg has the highest per capita broadband access in the world; we estimate more than 60% of Blacksburg residents have broadband (Ethernet) access at home or at work (or often both).
